Stuck In Our Heads - Vol. 9 - December 2007

And, here we are in the final month of the year. No matter how I fight it, I can't shake the notion that it is time to start totting up the accounts for 2007 and spell out what has been gained, what has been lost.

"Well hell, Paul, even Comedy Central is doing that. You can't get through a Scrubs rerun without a spot for that blasted Last Laugh 2007 special playing two or three times. Why are you even bothering trying to fight it?"

You're right, of course. The issue arises when I look at the list of things I planned to do in 2007 and find there are so, so many items on that list that haven't been crossed off. I still live in DC. I haven't taken a vacation to Mackinac Island. I still don't speak Spanish or Russian. I do not wear more stylish shoes than I did a year ago. I do not have surgical privileges at any accredited healthcare facility. I still haven't found the last Hidden Picture on page 27 of the January 1987 issue of Highlights Magazine. I am still compelled to obey the laws of physics.

There is, however, one item that would be crossed off if it had been on the list in the first place: initiate the Stuck in Our Heads Playlist Project. That's right. I didn't start the year planning to indulge in this monthly game. Nevertheless, it has become a substantial bright spot in my monthly routine.

Like I always say, it's important to celebrate the little victories.

Speaking of little victories, this month is the first time a single artist is represented on the playlist with four different songs submitted by four different contributors. (For the record, that doesn't count my submission.) There have been an armload of months when the same song was submitted by numerous contributors, and Radiohead came remarkably close to breaking the arbitrary Four-From-Four barrier last month. Alas, they didn't quite make it. As such, Tom Waits becomes the first artist to win the coveted 4F4 designation from the Stuck In Our Heads Playlist Project.

I guess I'm not the only one nursing cloudy days and hangovers this month.
